[Event report] International Tourism Symposium on IYSTD 2017 in Toba City, Japan

The International Tourism Symposium on IYSTD 2017 was held from 15th to 19th October at two cities in Japan. From Wakayama University, Dr. Kumi Kato (Deputy Director at Center for Tourism Research [CTR] / Professor at the Faculty of Tourism) and Ms. Riho Obara (Senior student at the Faculty of Tourism) attended the Mie Symposium, which was the second main program following the Okayama Symposium, on 18th October in Toba City, Mie Prefecture.
This event was organized by Japan Tourism Agency (JTA), Okayama City and Mie Prefecture, in cooperation with the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), aiming to promote the idea of the "International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development" proclaimed by the United Nations.
The theme for the Mie Symposium was "Women's Roles in the Sustainable Tourism for Development". Dr. Kato, as a moderator, carried on the discussion with the female panels; an executive chef, a master brewer of sake and a director at a barrier-free tourism NPO, in the third session themed as “Sustainable Tourism and Destination Development Led by Women”.

As a special session, the delegates from the ASEAN Plus Three Tourism Youth Summit presented their activities done during September in the Philippines and Thailand. The 10 representatives from ASEAN countries, South Korea and Japan also discussed on the “Contribution to the Future through Sustainable Tourism from Youth Perspective”.
This session was a part of the follow-up program, the “ASEAN Plus Three Tourism Youth Summit in Japan”, of the main program took place in the two ASEAN countries. The workshop was also conducted just before the Mie Symposium, on 15th October at Wakayama University in cooperation with CTR.
