Abstract
The purpose of this research note was to examine the establishment process of sport commission in Japanese municipalities. Our results of semi-structured interviews conducted with the personnel of sport commission of Saitama, Niigata, and Fukuoka cities indicated that the establishment process including decision making process, essential conditions for the establishment, and the way of information gathering differed across sport commissions. Similarly, the issues each sport commission currently faces varied as well. To position Japan as a sustainable sport tourism destination after the mega sport events, the establishment and management of sport commission based on the process- rather than goal-oriented process will be required.
