Overview
Tourism is a vital contributor to the Italian economy. According to the UNWTO, Italy is the fifth most visited country by international tourist arrivals. However, tourism shows itself as a distinct geographical phenomenon. In fact, the attractiveness of destinations may vary significantly between neighboring areas. This seminar first provides a brief background of tourism in Italy. Using Lombardy region, an economic and industrial powerhouse in Italy, as an example, the seminar then presents an ongoing study that aims to develop indicators to measure local destinations’ performance and attractiveness.
