September 27th is World Tourism Day as designated by the United Nations World Tourism Organization(UNWTO), and since 1980, seminars and events based on each year's theme have been held around the world.
This year's theme is "Tourism for Inclusive Growth".
We, Center for Tourism Research, Wakayama University, celecrate this day with our staff and visiting fellows.

Motohiro Adachi
Vice President, Professor, Faculty of Economics
Bio: Prof. ADACHI Motohiro is Director, Center for Tourism Research (CTR), Wakayama University. He is also a Vice-President of Wakayama University. He gained his PhD at the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom in Economics. Much of his work is in land economics and rural revitalization. He is currently collaborating with CTR researchers on a project that examines the extent to which tourism can contribute to rural revitalization in several Japanese prefectures.

Ricardo Nicolás Proganó
Lecturer, Center for Tourism Research
Bio: Dr. Ricardo Nicolas Progano is Lecturer at the Center for Tourism Research, Wakayama University, Japan. His research interests include religious tourism and cultural tourism in local communities. Particularly, he has researched about spiritual and pilgrimage tourism in Japan from an anthropological perspective, analyzing recent developments through qualitative fieldwork. He combines his backgrounds in Asian studies (University of El Salvador) and Tourism studies (Wakayama University) leveraging his language skills in Spanish, English and Japanese to engage with different stakeholders and present research findings to wider audiences.

Husna Zainal Abidin
Lecturer, Center for Tourism Research
Bio: Dr Zainal Abidin recently completed her PhD from the University of Surrey and has been appointed as lecturer at Wakayama University, Japan (commencing August 2021). She is an experienced qualitative researcher with research expertise in the field of digital collaboration and research methods using biosensors in tourism. Additionally, Dr Zainal Abidin is a researcher on projects focusing on the role of augmented reality in arts and heritage, pre- and post-COVID19. Her research interests lie within the realms of destination management, digital platforms, and digitally facilitated visitor experiences, i.e., exploring the role of digital platforms in enhancing knowledge sharing and communication amongst stakeholders and the service design required to positively impact local communities and societies.
Kazue Nakamoto
Principal Officer, International Engagement Division, Wakayama University
Bio: Kazue Nakamoto has over 25 year experience in higher education with an emphasis on tourism and international affairs, both in Japan and Australia. Kazue is currently Principal Officer, Center for Tourism Research and International Relations Division for Wakayama University and is involved in tourism research and education projects.

Kathleen M. Adams
Professor, Department of Anthropology, Loyola University Chicago (USA)
Bio: Kathleen M. Adams is a Visiting Fellow at the Center for Tourism Research at Wakayama University (2021-22), Professorial Research Associate in Anthropology at SOAS University of London, Professor Emerita of Anthropology at Loyola University Chicago, and Adjunct Curator at the Field Museum of Natural History. Her research centers on cultural tourism, addressing issues such as local knowledge and tourism resilience; heritage tourism, museums and the arts; the politics of tourism; ethical quandaries in tourism research; and qualitative tourism research methods. Her award-winning books include The Ethnography of Tourism: Edward Bruner and Beyond (2019, with N. Leite and Q. Casteneda) and Art as Politics: Re-crafting Identities, Tourism and Power in Tana Toraja, Indonesia (2006). She has also authored Indonesia: History, Heritage, Culture (2019); Everyday Life in Southeast Asia (2012, with K. Gillogly) and other volumes, as well as articles on a wide array of tourism topics. Her research focuses on island Southeast Asia and California. Adams has held visiting professorships at various universities in Asia, including Ateneo de Manila University and Al-Farabi National University of Kazakhstan and she was an Issac Mannasseh Meyer Senior Fellow at the National University of Singapore.

Bailey Adie
Independent Scholar
Bio: Dr. Bailey Ashton Adie is an independent scholar and the Chair of the Leisure Studies Association. Her research interests include World Heritage tourism, tourism marketing, community resilience, second homes, community-based tourism, tourism and development, and heritage tourism. She is the author of the Routledge book, World Heritage and Tourism: Marketing and Management. Her work has been published in edited books and leading journals, including Annals of Tourism Research, Current Issues in Tourism, the Journal of Sustainable Tourism, and the Journal of Heritage Tourism. She also sits on the editorial board of the Journal of Heritage Tourism and El Periplo Sustentable.

Stroma Cole
Senior Lecturer, University of Westminster (UK)
Bio: Dr Stroma Cole combines her academic career with action research and consultancy. Her research explores the interconnect between tourism, gender and water rights. Stroma has a long history of working on small islands particularly in Indonesia. In 2020 she received a British Academy Knowledge Frontier grant to explore the connections between Water Insecurity and Gender Based Violence. Stroma is most well known for her tourism and water nexus research in Bali a longitudinal action research project.
She is a director of Equality in Tourism an international charity seeking to increase gender equality in tourism. With research interests in gender, responsible tourism development, and the links between tourism, the SDGs and Human Rights (particularly to water), Stroma is an activist researcher critiquing the consequences of tourism development.
She has over 30 publications, most recently the Forward to an edited volume on Tourism and Gender Based Violence, following her edited book Gender Equality and Tourism: Beyond Empowerment (2018) and her edited volume with Morgan, on Tourism and Inequality in 2010 and her monograph Tourism, Culture and Development: Hopes, Dreams and Realities in Eastern Indonesia; Stroma is an Associate Editor for Annals of Tourism Research and on the editorial board at Journal of Sustainable Tourism.

Philip Hayward
Adjunct Professor, University of Technology Sydney (Australia)
Bio:Dr Philip Hayward is an adjunct professor in the School of Communication at the University of Technology Sydney. His doctoral degree at Macquarie University, Sydney (Australia), completed in 1996, concerned intercultural communication between Australian and Papua New Guinean performers on the Tabaran music project. He founded the online journal of island and maritime studies Shima in 2007 and continues to edit it. He has written and edited 19 books, including, most recently Cruisicology: the music culture of cruise ships (2019, co-authored with David Cashman). He has also published a number of articles about tourism and cultural heritage in Ryūkyū-ko.

Dimitri Ioannides
Chaired Professor of Human Geography and Head of Discipline, Mid-Sweden University (Sweden)
Bio: Dimitri Ioannides is Chaired Professor of Human Geography in the Institution of Economics, Geography, Law and Tourism. He has published extensively in various journals including Annals of Tourism Research, Tourism Management and the Journal of Sustainable Tourism. He has co-authored several books including the Economic Geography of the Tourist Industry (Routledge). Currently, he is also an editor of Tourism Geographies (in charge of special projects). He is a past recipient of the Roy Wolfe Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Recreation, Tourism and Sport specialty group of the Association of American Geographers.

Devi Kausar

Bio:?Devi Roza K. Kausar is an Associate Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Tourism, Universitas Pancasila, Jakarta. She was the Chair of the 8th ITSA Biennial Conference that was held hybrid on December 2, 2020. Devi has a PhD in International Development from Nagoya University – Japan, a Master’s Degree in Tourism Management from Curtin University – Australia, and a Bachelor of Economics from Padjadjaran University – Indonesia. She also holds a Certified Hospitality Education certification from the American Hotel and Lodging Educational Institute (AHLEI) and is also a Certified Research Reviewer for the Ministry of Research & Technology. Her research interests include cultural heritage tourism, sustainable tourism, rural development, and disaster mitigation in tourism.

Dominic Lapointe

Bio: Dominic Lapointe is a professor in the Department of Urban and Tourism Studies at Université du Québec à Montréal. He holds the Chaire de recherche sur les dynamiques touristiques et les relations socioterritoriales and leaders of the Groupe de recherche et d’intervention tourisme territoire et société (GRITTS) at UQAM. He is the Head editor of Téoros, the oldest French language tourism research journal. His work explores the production of tourism space and its role in the capitalist system expansion and its biopolitical dimensions. Its latest research look at climate change, social innovations, indigeneity and critical perspective in tourism studies.
Meghan L. Muldoon
Assistant Professor, University of Groningen, Campus Frysl?n, Leeuwarden (the Netherlands)
Bio:?Dr. Meghan L. Muldoon is an Assistant Professor of Sustainable Tourism at the University of Groningen’s Campus Frysl?n in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands, where she teaches Tourism, Culture, and Sustainability as well as Qualitative Methods. Her PhD is from the University of Waterloo, Canada, where she undertook a PhotoVoice research study with tourism stakeholders residing in the townships of Cape Town, South Africa. Her research interests include the intersections of tourism and poverty, postcolonialism, feminisms, digital discourses, representations of Indigeneity, and arts-based methodologies.

Bio:?Dr Faith Ong's research interests lie in the role of tourism, hospitality and events as tools of social change. In particular, she focuses on inclusivity for marginalised communities in events and tourism. Faith is currently undertaking research on inclusivity at events relating to mobilities and LGBTIQ+ communities, exploring the signals of inclusion and exclusion at occasions that are meant to bring communities together. Furthermore, she continues to work in areas related to volunteering, both in tourism and events.

His research draws from range of disciplinary and theoretical perspectives, especially from the fields of creative/tourism geography, rural and island studies, with a focus on East Asia. Key research topics include socially engaged art festivals, relational aesthetics, creative in-migrants, sustainability, and rural revitalization. Bio:?Jack Shepherd is a researcher at the European Tourism Research Institute at Mid Sweden University, ?stersund, Sweden and a Visiting Junior Research Fellow at Wakayama University, Japan. His research focuses on the relationship between tourism and peacebuilding in settings of intractable conflict. He has spent much of his career studying the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through the dual lenses of tourism studies and peace studies. Bio:?Dr Elaine Chiao Ling Yang is a lecturer at Griffith University. Elaine’s research investigated various issues pertinent to women in tourism as workers, entrepreneurs, and travellers. She has also undertaken research on the social impact of tourism, Asian tourism, and solo consumers. Elaine’s goal is to work on projects that bring positive changes to women and marginalised groups in tourism and hospitality. Elaine has been identified as an Emerging Tourism Scholar by e-Review of Tourism Research and she won the Early Researcher Award from the Critical Tourism Studies Asia-Pacific Network in 2020.
