Project summary
In Japan, the terms SDGs and sustainability are widely used by companies, governments and other reginal organizations. However, in tourism context, it is tourism destinations’ decisions how they understand and adopt these concepts. In this project, we focus on Steps to Destination Success (StDS), one of the approaches of sustainable tourism presented by Ritchie and Crouch (2003). By using their approach, destination management systems such as vision setting, action policy, and implementation plans will be investigated from the perspective of inter-organizational collaboration. In specific, by focusing on Kyushu Olle and Miyagi Olle, we will investigate the trends of Olle tourists and inter-organizational collaboration on the tourism supply side. These two Olle are the sister version of Jeju Olle, which originated in Jeju Island in South Korea and is based on the concept of "walking slowly and enjoying yourself while feeling close to nature such as the coastline and mountains, and the alleys of private houses." In addition to the two Olle, as a comparative study, we investigate the Kumano Kodo Ohechi route, which has a potential to became a leading sustainable tourist destination. We aim to elucidate the mechanism consisting of how to set operational capacity, setting the scope of value provision to travelers, and building a comprehensive operating system. This project is expected to contribute to sustainable tourism research and the future planning and development of sustainable tourism destinations.
