Activity report
In FY2023, based on the research regarding Hatsusaburo Yoshida's bird's eye view maps, we published the pamphlet named "Showa Retro Wakayama Guide - Wakayama City and Wakanoura" using his bird’s eye view maps drawn in 1900’s. Currently, the pamphlet is distributed at the entrance of the Wakayama Prefectural Modern Art Museum and the Wakayama Civic Library building, which is directly connected to Nankai Wakayama City Station, and has received a certain amount of positive feedback. When distributed individually, many university students showed interest and commented that the map with its retro Showa-era image was "cute," while elderly residents in Wakayama Prefecture talked about the places they had visited in the past, and it seemed to evoke their memories of landscape that had now changed. In addition, some foreign researchers showed interest in the bird's-eye view and advised that an English version of the pamphlet should be produced. The above comments might suggest not only the possibility of its use as a means of inviting visitors to slow tourism and also materials of tourism education for students. It will be necessary for us to make proposals for its actual use in the near future.
