Research Unit | Management |
Primary investigator | Hayato Nagai |
Co investigators | Takahiro Ikeji(Japan Travel Bureau Foundation) |
Project period | 2018/5/1~2019/3/31 |
Project summary | The widespread of short-term rentals (Minpaku in Japanese) resulted in significant controversies, especially from local residents. Having said that, the past studies regarding residents’ attitude on short-term rentals are limited. In order to fill this gap in the literature, this study explores the antecedents of residents’ negative attitudes on short-term rental. Specifically, this study incorporates the construct of cross-cultural tolerance in Social Exchange Theory as a theoretical framework. This study will quantitatively test the hypothesized-model with the data collected from residents in Kyoto city. The findings of the study are expected to contribute to understand whether the negative attitudes of residents can be attributed to their rational decision or their low tolerance on different culture. |
Activity reports
During the project period (April 2018 – March 2019), the research team first conducted an extensive review of related literature. The research team then conducted a field work in Kyoto to understand current situations of short-term rentals. Based on the findings from the literature review and the field work, an online questionnaire was developed and collected quantitative data from residents in Kyoto city. Using results from the research activities conducted during FY2018, the research team is currently developing a book chapter and a journal article which will be submitted during FY2019. The initial findings from the research project were presented at CTR’s research symposium in November 2018.
