Project period | 2018/5/1~2019/3/31 |
Project summary | Japan will host several mega-events in the next few years including the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo. Little is known about non-host destination residents’ responses toward mega-event development and how they evolve over time. This may hinder the government’s goal to have an inclusive Games and far-reaching legacies. The proposed research investigates this important and timely issue by using a comparative study that contrasts responses of residents from urban versus regional non-host destination. It will be the first initiative in providing regional DMOs with an insight into non-host residents’ perceptions and attitude toward mega-event development and legacies. It will also inform policy makers on potential challenges the community is likely to face with further tourism growth associated with the mega-events. Importantly, the project addresses the Japanese government strategic priority of regional revitalization. |
Activity reports
During the project period (April 2018 – March 2019), the research team first conducted an extensive review of related literature and collected information related to the research project to familiarize the research context. Based on the findings from the literature review and other research activities, an online questionnaire was developed and collected quantitative data from residents in Osaka and Tokyo. A journal article reporting the findings from the online survey will be submitted to an international tourism journal during FY2019. The initial findings from the research project were presented at CTR’s research symposium in November 2018. The research team will also present the study at the Asia Pacific Tourism Association’s annual conference which will be held in Vietnam in July 2019.
